Here at Bitch Beer we love our pets. We really REALLY love our pets, 60% of which are of the canine persuasion. And we find that we aren’t the minority in the beer community. There seems to be a plentitude of playful pups underfoot where ever you journey in craft beer, from the dog park at Banger’s Sausage House, to the pack of pugs running amok in Middleton Brewing’s newly expanded digs, to the queenly canine namesakes of Hops & Grains mainstay brews, Pale Dog and The One They Call Zoe.
It’s for good reason that dogs make such an impact on craft beer drinkers. What makes people smile more than a great beer and a loving dog? Here in Austin there is a pack of dogs who are all exceptionally adept at making people feel happy and supported.
Divine Canines, a nonprofit organization that provides free “animal assisted therapy” to 25 sites in the Austin area, trains dogs to help promote physical and emotional wellness to local schools, hospitals and nursing homes. Individuals ranging from children struggling with literacy to elderly men and women with Alzheimer’s to wounded soldiers returning from war have all benefitted greatly from the unconditional love and affection these philanthropic Fidos provide.
Now beer lovers can support this organization and the selfless dogs that support so many through a fundraiser called Barks for Beers. Austinites can buy a special pint glass and an accompanying “pawsport” for $20 at local stores and participating breweries. Then, from May 23rd through June 2nd, they can visit 8 local craft breweries for a free beer and a stamp in the pawsport for their donation to the organization! The participating breweries are Thirsty Planet, Jester King, Hops & Grain, Twisted X, Adelbert’s, Austin Beerworks, Circle Brewing, and Rogness.
You can get your glass from any of the retailers listed on Divine Canine’s event webpage. You can also snag a glass at a Barks for Beers kickoff “Yappy Hour” tomorrow, Saturday May 17th at Woof Gang Bakery in West Lake. The dogs will be out 4-7pm, and pint glasses will be available for purchase. See above paragraphs for the benefits of mixing beer and dogs. Many smiles. Many, many smiles.
