Like so many members of the Austin craft beer community, we were deeply saddened to hear news late last night of the passing of Walt Powell, VP of Operations for Flix Brewhouse. He passed away yesterday suddenly and unexpectedly.
Though we only knew Walt socially, and for a very short time in the grand scheme of life, it was clear that he possessed a true love for craft beer. He was one of those rare individuals who will be remembered for his wit as much as he will be for his wisdom.
A memorial page has been started on Facebook for friends and family to share their photos, stories and memories of Walt. With more than 350 ‘likes’ in the short hours since it was created, it is clear that Walt touched the lives of many.
Of Walt’s many accomplishments, he will certainly be remembered for skillfully pulling off the highly successful inaugural Firkin Fest at Flix this April.
Flix Brewhouse is currently in the process of planning a memorial service for Walt, which we will post when announced. Funeral arrangements are also in the works. Until then, friends will be gathering at the Draught House tonight at 6:00 p.m. to have a beer in Walt’s honor. Fitting, because the folks at Flix are asking everyone to “Drink a good beer Today. For Walt.”
We think it’s the least we can do.
Update 6/11/13: Flix will be holding a memorial service for Walt on Tuesday, June 18th at 1 pm. The plan is to drink good beer, share stories and celebrate Walt’s life.
