It’s estimated that more than 100,000 people clamor along the guardrail of the Congress Ave. bridge and the shores of Lady Bird Lake every year to grab a glimpse of one of the major prides of our fair city, the world’s largest colony of Mexican Freetail bats. And, while it’s certainly a sight to see from any vantage point, after this past weekend’s Bats & Beers event, we can’t help but feel a little sorry for those sad saps on the shoreline.
Bats & Beers is a seasonal riverboat party put on by the folks at You Stay Hoppy Austin, Capital Cruises and Whip In, bringing together some of the best things life has to offer–craft beer, yummy food and high seas adventures. (So, Lady Bird Lake isn’t exactly the High Seas, but after a couple beers and a little imagination, it’ll do the trick.) Beer and food offerings change with each cruise. Sunday’s event featured pizza from Pinthouse Pizza and some outstanding beers brewed in collaboration between Hops & Grain’s Josh Hare and Pinthouse Pizza’s Joe Mohrfeld.
The beer offerings included a series of three pale ale firkins, each brewed with Mosaic, Nugget and Simcoe hops. Each firkin was then dry hopped with one of the three hops to showcase each individual flavor. Delicious, and dare we say, educational. Another huge highlight was a special Casa Del Roble blend with strawberries, but that’s all we’ll really say about that one out of respect for the unlucky souls who weren’t present.
The night was made even more enjoyable by another thing we love–men in costume. What started as a Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou theme for the Pinthouse Pizza crew, soon turned into an all-out-Wes Anderson free for all with the Hops & Grain gentlemen donning Rushmore and Bottle Rocket costumes.
Stay tuned for photos of some of our favorite moments from Bats & Beers.
