With highly acclaimed craft breweries like Ballast Point and Firestone Walker penetrating the Texas market this year, and Founders Brewing Co. still on the way, you don’t need us to tell you that 2013 has been pretty darn good to ol’ Texas.
While Southern Tier, the latest big name in craft beer to hit Texas shelves, may sound like it hails from our side of the Mason Dixon line, it’s actually a product of Lakewood, New York. Started in 2002 by Phineas DeMink and Allen “Skip” Yahn, Southern Tier is known for brewing several different varieties of IPAs and innovative seasonals packed with flavors of boozy-chocolatey-coffee-pumpkin-goodness.
Southern Tier beers were scheduled to hit Austin Wednesday, but an unfortunate delivery delay pushed things back a few days. Well, never fear, because the beer has arrived and tap takeovers have been rescheduled, and they start TONIGHT. (See the list at the bottom of this post for details!)
Word is, year-round offerings will include–Live (bottle conditioned pale ale), IPA, 2xIPA (double IPA), 2xStout (double milk stout), 2xNitro (draft only double milk stout), Unearthly (imperial IPA) and Iniquity (imperial black ale). The first seasonals to hit Texas will be Hop Sun (summer wheat beer) and 2XSteam (aka double uncommon….see what they did there?)
The folks at Keg 1, who will be distributing Southern Tier here in Austin, helped us get ourselves acquainted with a few of the year round offerings. Here’s what we thought of them:
Live: A tasty, easy drinking, bottle conditioned pale ale, Live drinks deceptively smooth compared to its robustly hoppy nose. Expect some definite grassy notes and a hint of citrus.
IPA: Southern Tier cranks out a pretty solid IPA with this one–hoppy without being too bitter.
2XIPA: We moved right on from the standard IPA to this Double IPA, and it is just what you would expect, a boozier, slightly maltier counterpart to the original.
Unearthly: AT 9.5% abv, Unearthly, Southern Tier’s Imperial IPA, kicks things up another notch with some strong carmely, peppery, hoppy goodness. Just make sure to heed the warning on the label–“To underestimate Unearthly is to trifle with the mysteries of the universe, so please make sure to consumer wisely.”
Iniquity: A black ale you need to taste for yourself.
