Beer of the Week: RU-55

Is it  pronounced “Are You 55?” Or maybe “Rue 55?” Maybe it is just, “Russ.”

However you pronounce the name, RU-55 rocks as much as its artwork (congrats Josh!). When I had this beer at Jester King’s Funk N’ Sour Fest, I knew that I immediately needed more than the pour I was given. So when I was out getting myself a Valentine’s Day bomber, I made sure to be on the hunt for RU-55.

Created in tribute of Jester King’s good friend, Russ Beattie, RU-55 is a red ale that has been aged in oak barrels with wild yeast—making it nice and sour.

OG: 1.060  FG: 1.004  ABV: 7.3%
Water: Hill Country Well Water

Grains: Organic Munich Malt, Organic Two
Row Malt, Organic Pilsner Malt, Carared Malt, Crystal Malt, Melanoidin Malt, Roasted Barley

Hops: East Kent Goldings, Czech Saaz, and/or other varieties depending on availability

Yeast: Farmhouse Yeast, Wild Yeast from the Texas Hill County.

Bacteria: Lactobacillus and Pediococcus.

  1. I think this year’s Funk Metal has little more complexity and depth. Having said that, the RU-55 still kicks the crap out of most American made sours. Barring an aged Deschutes Dissident
